In practice for almost 30 years, Thomas Sobol focuses on pharmaceutical and medical device litigation on behalf of individuals, consumer classes, large and small health plans, and state governments.  His efforts in public health matters and fraud, waste, and abuse cases have recovered more than $12 billion for his consumer, institutional, and state government clients. 

As the Managing Partner of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro’s Boston office since 2002, Mr. Sobol currently leads litigation against numerous pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers regarding the safety and efficacy of their products.  He has served as co-lead counsel in countless cases seeking to hold manufacturers accountable including In re Average Wholesale Price Litigation, In re Neurontin Sales and Marketing Practices Litigation, In re Zyprexa Product Liability Litigation (on behalf of health plans), and In re Wellbutrin Antitrust Litigation.  Mr. Sobol also represents hundreds of patients injured by faulty medical devices in litigation involving products such as the Charité Artificial Back Disc.

In 2010, Mr. Sobol helped win a $142 million jury verdict in RICO litigation regarding the safety and efficacy of the prescription drug Neurontin.  Other recent successes include the First Databank settlement (resulting in a 4% price reduction of all retail drugs), Vytorin settlement ($47 million recovery for consumers and third party payors), Vioxx settlement ($80 million for litigating third party payors), and Paxil settlement ($100 million for direct purchasers).

In addition, Mr. Sobol serves as lead counsel to the Prescription Access Litigation (PAL) project, the largest coalition of health care advocacy groups that are joined together to fight illegal, loophole-based overpricing by pharmaceutical companies.  PAL has approximately 100 organizational members in more than 30 states.

In the past, Mr. Sobol served as Special Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the states of New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and served as one of the private counsel for Massachusetts and New Hampshire in ground breaking litigation against the tobacco industry.  These cases led to significant injunctive relief and to monetary recovery in excess of $10 billion to those states.  In 2000, the National Law Journal named Mr. Sobol one of Massachusetts’ ten leading litigators.

Mr. Sobol is a member of the bar of Massachusetts and has been appointed pro hac vice in numerous federal courts across the country. 

Mr. Sobol graduated summa cum laude from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1980 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1979.  Mr. Sobol graduated cum laude from Boston University School of Law in 1983 and served as judicial clerk for then-Chief Justice Allan M. Hale of the Massachusetts Appeals Court from 1983 to 1984.
